Vlad the Impaler: The Brutal Ruler Who Inspired Dracula

 

Vlad the Impaler, also known as Vlad Dracula, was a 15th century prince of Wallachia (a region in modern-day Romania) who is remembered for his brutal methods of punishing his enemies. When Vlad’s father died in 1447, he was briefly released from Ottoman prison to rule Wallachia, but was eventually deposed and forced to flee to Moldavia, where he was supported by his cousin, Bogdan II.

Vlad regained the throne of Wallachia in 1456, and immediately set about consolidating his power by eliminating his political enemies. He is famous for using impalement as a means of punishment, and it is estimated that he impaled between 40,000 and 100,000 people during his reign.
